Prior to my position as Communications Coordinator at LATITUDE Chicago, the non-profit lacked any clear strategy for its social media, primarily Instagram and Facebook. LATITUDE has many initiatives including its printing and scanning lab, artist residency, open call gallery, and educational classes. I developed a consistent tone of voice, strategically curated images, and engaged with LATITUDE’s mission of shared education to effectively communicate these programs and expand its audience. A common issue within contemporary photography spaces is the dominant presence of cisgendered, white, and heterosexual men. A collective mission between myself and the rest of the staff was to remove LATITUDE from this narrative by establishing a welcoming environment for POC and queer communities.

During the month of February, I researched and shared information on Black pioneers within photography who are less known to the general public.

Instagram Stories have proven to be a vital promotional tool in gaining sign-ups for LATITUDE’s educational classes and workshops. These are some examples of how I’ve used Stories to increase sign-ups or garner traffic to the website.
